Lebanon’s new gov’t to prioritize fuel, medicine crises

Cairo, Sep 13 (EFE).- The new Lebanese government will prioritize handling the fuel and medicine crises, newly appointed prime minister Najib Mikat said on Monday during the first cabinet meeting.

“We will dedicate ourselves to solving the issue of fuel and medicines to stop the humiliating situation in which people find themselves,” Mikati said during the meeting.

“A lot of work awaits us (…) we all have to make sacrifices, the country requires exceptional measures,” to end the severe economic crisis that has worsened amid a year-long political deadlock, he added.

Mikati on Friday announced the formation of a government after 13 months under a caretaker government due to a lack of political consensus.

The international community has requested structural and financial reforms in exchange for aid to alleviate the crisis that pushed over 80% of the population into poverty amid a severe shortage of basic products. EFE
