Locals transform Spanish town with vibrant crochet sun shades
Alhaurín de la Torre, Málaga, Jun 25 (EFE).- The installation of sun shades in public spaces across Spain when the Summer heat kicks in is a common practice but a small town has been adding a creative twist to the ritual.
In Alhaurín de la Torre, southern Spain, a kilometer’s worth of colorful and intricate crochet provides its residents with shade.
A group of 17 weavers aged 60 and 90 are behind the artistic and practical intervention.
This project started in 2019 when residents came up with the idea of replacing the plastic awnings that were erected during the summer season with crochet designs.
This year, dozens of crochet umbrellas also decorate the streets of the old town.
Anita Navarta, Trini Fernández, Felisa Reina, Josefa Mancera and Dora Nogales, who at 86 is the oldest member of the group and one of the first to join the crochet project, sit on a wrought iron bench chatting to each other.
Josefa proudly says she made six cloths and eighteen umbrellas while the others nod and laugh.
“She’s a machine,” they smile.
