Rybakina 1st Kazakh Grand Slam semifinalist at Wimbledon

London, Jul 6 (EFE).- Elena Rybakina on Wednesday won seven consecutive games on her way to defeating Ajla Tomljanovic 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the Wimbledon quarterfinals to become the first Kazakh ever to make a Grand Slam semifinal.

The Australian got off to a good start, earning a service break in the third game, keeping her own delivery out of Rybakina’s reach while facing no break points.

The momentum, however, seemed to be shifting in the second set as Rybakina took an early 2-0 lead only to lose the subsequent two games to level the score at 2-2.

The Kazakh player then crucially went on to win seven games in a row, first to seal the second set 6-2, before building a 3-0 third-set lead.

Both players traded service breaks in the sixth and seventh games, but Rybakina served for the match in the ninth game to seal the victory.

Throughout the one-hour-and-51-minute match, the Kazakh player fired 15 aces, bringing her Wimbledon tally to 43 so far, 13 more than any other woman at the tournament.

Next up for Rybakina will be Romania’s Simona Halep who prevailed over US Amanda Anisimova 6-2, 6-4 in just 63 minutes. EFE
