Gunman shoots dead guard at Azerbaijan’s Tehran embassy

Baku, Jan 27 (EFE).- A gunman killed one person and injured two others after he stormed the Azerbaijani embassy in Iran’s capital Tehran on Friday in what Baku has described as a “terrorist attack”.

A male suspect who entered the embassy with a Kalashnikov killed the embassy’s head of security and wounded two guards, Azerbaijan’s foreign ministry reported in a strongly-worded statement. He was later arrested.

“We are of the opinion that the recent anti-Azerbaijani campaign (…) in Iran has encouraged such attacks against our diplomatic mission,” it said, adding that Iran has the “obligation” to ensure security at the complex under the Vienna convention.

Azerbaijan’s president Ilham Aliev in a statement condemned the “terrorist attack” and called for a swift investigation.

Tehran police said the assailant forced his way into the embassy with his two young children and suggested the attack was related to a personal matter, the Iran Front Page news outlet reported.

The Islamic Republic of Iran’s foreign ministry condemned the attack and offered its condolences to the family of the victim and offered its sympathy to Azerbaijan, which shares a border with Iran.

Azerbaijani authorities noted that its embassies have previously been assaulted in London and Paris, although on those occasions it was by unarmed protesters.EFE
