Seoul monitors Pyongyang movements after harsh regime communiques

Seoul, May 3 (EFE).- South Korea’s army said Monday it is “closely monitoring” North Korea’s military movements and has not detected anything out of the ordinary a day after Pyongyang issued several statements vowing harsh responses against Washington and Seoul.

“Our army is closely monitoring the activities related (to the North Korean armed forces) and maintains firm preparation,” the spokesman for the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff Kim Jun-rak said at a Monday press conference. “No unusual signals have been detected to this day.”

North Korea issued three tough statements Sunday evening against the United States and South Korea — with which it is technically at war.

In one of the briefs, it said Washington faces “a crisis beyond its control” and chided US President Joe Biden for the tone used to refer to Pyongyang in his speech to Congress last week.

North Korea’s Foreign Ministry also released another statement Sunday accusing the United States of “insulting the dignity of its supreme leadership” for repeatedly denouncing the regime’s alleged human rights abuses.

In turn, Kim Yo-jong, sister of leader Kim Jong-un, denounced the recent shipment to North Korea of ??balloons with anti-regime propaganda by a group of defectors living across the border.

Kim Yo-jong, North Korea’s deputy propaganda director, called this action a “serious provocation” and said the regime is studying “proportional action” without adding further details.

The balloons were sent despite South Korea passing a law in March punishing these actions with a fine or a sentence of up to three years in prison on grounds that it seeks to protect southern citizens at the border, where North Korea has previously shot those balloons. EFE
