Liverpool confirm signing of Darwin Nuñez

Sports Desk, Jun 14 (EFE).- Uruguayan striker Darwin Nuñez has signed a six-year contract with Liverpool, the Premier League club said Tuesday.

Benfica, the Portuguese side where the forward spent the last two seasons, said that the Reds agreed to pay a guaranteed 75 million euros ($78 million) in transfer fees.

With performance add-ons, the value of the deal could reach 100 million euros, which would make Nuñez the most expensive acquisition in Liverpool history.

Nuñez, 22, contributed 48 goals in 85 games for Benfica in all competitions and has made 11 appearances for the Uruguay national team since October 2019.

“I’m very happy to be a part of this great club,” he said. “I’ve played against Liverpool and I’ve seen them in lots of games in the Champions League, and it’s my style of play. There are some great players here and I think it’s going to suit my style of play and I hope I can give everything that I’ve got in order to help the team.”

Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp got a good look at Nuñez in April when the clubs faced each other in the Champions League quarterfinals.

The Uruguayan accounted for half of Benfica’s four goals in the two-legged tie, won 6-4 by Liverpool.

Nuñez is seen as a replacement for Sadio Mane, who has signaled a desire to leave Anfield for Bayern Munich. EFE msg/dr
