Argentine VP reportedly in good health after scheduled surgery
Buenos Aires, Nov 4 (EFE).- Argentine Vice President Cristina Fernandez is recovering normally and in good condition after undergoing a hysterectomy Thursday at a hospital in this capital.
The 68-year-old former head of state “entered our institution to undergo a scheduled gynecological surgical procedure (that) was carried out via laparoscopy,” the Sanatorio Otamendi hospital said in a statement.
“The patient is experiencing a normal post-operative (recovery and is) in good general health,” the statement said.
Legal advisers to Fernandez, widow of late head of state Nestor Kirchner, confirmed to Efe that she under went a hysterectomy, an operation that involves the removal of the uterus and, in some cases, the cervix as well.
The vice president is expected to remain hospitalized for up to five days while recovering from the surgery.
The operation was performed 10 days before legislative elections in which half of the seats in Argentina’s Chamber of Deputies and a third of the seats in the Senate are up for grabs.
The ruling leftist Frente de Todos (Everyone’s Front) coalition will go into that balloting still reeling from a stinging defeat in September’s midterm primary elections, which were seen as an informal referendum on President Alberto Fernandez’s first two years in office.
Frente de Todos’s control of the Senate and its leading minority position in the lower house will both be at stake on Nov. 14. EFE
