Mexico Raises Alert Level For Popocatepetl Volcano As Activity Intensifies
MORELOS, MÉXICO (Masehual) — El estado de Morelos tendría que evacuar alrededor de 25 mil personas de los poblados más cercanos al Popocatépetl en caso de que el semáforo de Alerta Volcánica pasara la fase amarilla fase tres, afirmó el coordinador estatal de Protección Civil del gobierno de Morelos, Enrique Clemen Gallardo.
En rueda de prensa, el funcionario aseguró que además de la evacuación de los poblados morelenses ubicados en un radio de 15 kilómetros del coloso, por el territorio morelense deberán pasar los habitantes de algunas comunidades de Puebla y estado de México, si el comportamiento del volcán continúa modificándose como hasta ahora.
Luego de conocerse que el semáforo de Alerta Volcánica fue movido por el Centro de Prevención de Desastres (Cenapred) debido a la reciente y fuerte actividad mostrada por el Popocatépetl, Clemen Gallardo llamó a la población de Morelos a no alarmarse, ya que el cambio no implica el crecimiento del riesgo, sino el reforzamiento de las actividades y coordinación interinstitucional que permita tener mejor aceitada una probable acción de emergencia.
Clemen Gallardo informó que dentro de las dinámicas a la que están obligadas las autoridades por protocolo se incluyen simulacros oficiales como de gabinete, por lo que en los próximos días estarán realizándose algunos.
Informó que las cinco rutas oficiales de evacuación del estado de Morelos se encuentra en inmejorables condiciones, salvo en algunos tramos donde los pobladores han colocado topes.
Agregó que son un total de 18 albergues los que se encuentran listos para recibir a las personas que eventualmente pudieran ser evacuadas al incrementarse la actividad del Popocatépetl.

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) — Mexican authorities on Thursday raised the alert level for the Popocatepetl volcano near Mexico City to indicate increasing intensity after it started spewing steam and gas and ejected burning fragments that caused fires in surrounding pastures.
Mexico’s National Center for Disaster Prevention warned people to stay away from Popocatepetl, saying that in the previous 24 hours it had observed more than 200 discharges from the volcano, some 50 miles to the southeast.
The center raised the volcano’s alert level to yellow phase three from yellow phase two, indicating possible magma expulsion and explosions of increasing intensity. It is the third-highest warning on the center’s seven-step scale, according to the Mexican Civil Protection agency.
An eruption late on Tuesday generated a 3 kilometer (1.9 mile) column that released fragments of burning rock up to 2 km (1.24 miles) away in a northeasterly direction, setting fires to nearby pastures. Several municipalities reported ash falling on them from the explosion, the center said.
Popocatepetl has spewed smoke and ash over the last few years, and a major eruption in 2000 forced the evacuation of nearly 50,000 residents in three states surrounding the peak.
The agency has previously said that similar intensifications of activity in the 5,450 meter (17,900 foot) volcano could provoke big explosions capable of sending incandescent fragments out over considerable distances, as well as ash showers.
