MEMPHIS, TN (WREG) — Memphis Animal Services is looking to give away dogs and puppies who have tested positive for the Canine Distemper Virus in hopes of not starting an outbreak within the shelter.
This comes after one dog tested positive for the virus after showing symptoms at the shelter.
After a CDV outbreak in June, MAS made changes where they could contact-trace and identify what dogs have been exposed.
There are a total of 62 dogs and puppies that have been exposed to CDV that are not already pre-adopted or on other deadline pleas.
Forty-two of them need to be fostered or adopted and out of the shelter this week.
MAS says they need help getting these dogs out of the shelter before their incubation period ends and they potentially start shedding the virus to other dogs within the shelter.
According to MAS, dogs should only go to environments with no dogs or fully vaccinated adult dogs, not boarding or shelter environments.
MAS says due to the CDV exposure, the dogs are not surgical candidates.

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL/WREG) — Los Servicios para Animales de Memphis (MAS, por sus siglas en inglés) buscan regalar perros y cachorros que hayan dado positivo por el virus del moquillo canino con la esperanza de no iniciar un brote dentro del refugio.
Esto se produce después de que un perro dio positivo por el virus después de mostrar síntomas en el refugio.
Después de un brote de CDV en junio, MAS hizo cambios en los que podían rastrear contactos e identificar qué perros han estado expuestos.
Hay un total de 62 perros y cachorros que han estado expuestos a CDV que aún no son preadoptados o en otros motivos de fecha límite.
Cuarenta y dos de ellos necesitan ser acogidos o adoptados y salir del refugio esta semana.
MAS dice que necesitan ayuda para sacar a estos perros del refugio antes de que finalice su período de incubación y potencialmente comiencen a transmitir el virus a otros perros dentro del refugio.
Según MAS, los perros solo deben ir a entornos sin perros o perros adultos completamente vacunados, no a entornos de alojamiento o refugio.
MAS dice que debido a la exposición al CDV, los perros no son candidatos a cirugía.
