Newcastle hold Tottenham to 2-2 draw

Newcastle, England, Apr 4 (efe-epa).- Newcastle on Sunday held Tottenham to a 2-2 draw on the strength of a last-minute goal from super-sub Joseph Willock to deny the Spurs a top-four spot despite a Harry Kane brace.

With Welshman Gareth Bale out of the starting lineup, Tottenham got off to a slow start at St. James’ Park as the relegation-threatened Newcastle drew first blood in the 28th minute.

Brazilian Joelinton broke the scoreless deadlock on a first-touch, close-range shot, off a pass from English midfielder Sean Longstaff to spark his team’s hope for their first win in eight games.

But Newcastle’s joy was short-lived as Kane struck twice over a four-minute stretch.

The English forward brought his team level just a couple of minutes after conceding the first goal, taking advantage of a defensive mess that ended up with him tipping the ball into the wide-open net.

And four minutes later, Kane controlled a Tanguy Ndombele pass and fired it past goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.

The Spurs maintained their lead until the final stretch despite coach Steve Bruce’s efforts to find a solution on the bench.

Willock, who was sent on in the 79th minute, provided the answer, as the English midfielder made the most of a loose ball and poor defense inside the area in the 85th minute, bringing the game back to square one.

At that point, the Spurs’ coach Jose Mourinho turned to Bale, but the Welshman was unable to change the course of the game and thus Tottenham failed to capitalize on Chelsea’s defeat.

Tottenham remain fifth in the Premier League table with 49 points, two behind the Blues, while Newcastle are in the 17th spot just three points clear of the relegation zone. EFE-EPA
