Moreno: I will transfer government with its accounts in order

Quito, Jan 25 (efe-epa).- Less than two weeks before elections in Ecuador, the country’s president, Lenín Moreno, continues to keep his distance from the electoral process and assures he will transfer the government with its “accounts in order” and not as an “ambush” like the one he claims he inherited from his predecessor in 2017.

Moreno, who is not in the bidding for the 7 February polls, spoke with Efe in a week when the Andean nation received its first vaccines against Covid-19.

He is set to visit Washington on Monday, where he will look to deepen his country’s relations with Joe Biden’s administration. Former US president Donald Trump extended broad political and financial support to Moreno.

Ecuador’s national electoral council on Sunday held a test run for the voting process with a drill that included a protocol for the prevention of the spread of coronavirus.

Some 13 million Ecuadorians are entitled to vote in the general elections, which will designate the new president of the country, in addition to 137 members of the national assembly. EFE / EPA
