ExpOtaku celebrates anime, gaming culture as pandemic ‘salvation’

Logroño, Spain, Feb 18 (EFE).- The ExpOtaku fair returned on Friday to Spain’s northern city of Logroño for fans of anime, cosplay and gaming after being postponed last year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

This “geekism” has been a source of inspiration and salvation for many during the Covid-19 pandemic, the director of ExpOtaku, David Gaspar, told Efe.

The fair, which will last three days, celebrates Otaku, a Japanese word to describe people who are passionate about Japan’s pop culture including manga and anime, which includes many foreigners.

Gaspar says that during Covid-19 lockdowns, more and more people turned to video games, anime and manga as a form of entertainment and that this type of leisure was “very beneficial.” “This year, we have given everything we have to put this city on the map,” says Gaspar, adding the expo aims to attract at least 4,800 people.

The expo will have an area dedicated to Japan in which people will be able to play traditional Japanese games and eat Japanese food.

Visitors will also be able to try the latest consoles such as PlayStation VR and Xbox Series S. EFE
