France repatriates 25 minors, 10 women from Jihadist family camps in Syria

Paris, Jul 4 (EFE).- French authorities announced Tuesday the repatriation of 25 minors and 10 women from camps in northeastern Syria where members of Jihadist families are confined, an operation similar to those carried out in the last few months.

In a statement, the foreign affairs ministry said minors remain in the hands of social services for children and must be subject to medical follow-up. Adults remain under the authority of the justice department, it added.

The National Anti-Terrorist Prosecutor’s Office said in another statement that of the 10 women aged 23 to 40, seven have been arrested over pending warrants. The others were to appear Tuesday before an investigating judge.

The prosecutor said there is a 17-year-old girl among the minors for whom there was a search warrant.

It is the fourth time France has repatriated women and children confined in camps for families of Jihadists who went to fight with extremist groups such as the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq. In January, 15 women and 32 children also arrived from north-east Syria.

According to a group of French families of women and children held in these camps, there are still about 100 minors who they said should be repatriated by the French authorities.

France had previously been reluctant, but changed its stance last year after the conviction received from the European Human Rights Court for having refused the repatriation of two women and their children due to the risk to their safety, especially for minors. EFE
