Biden Administration To Admit Some Venezuelan Migrants Under New Policy, Send Others Back To Mexico

The Biden administration said Wednesday it will manage the surge of Venezuelans crossing the southern border with a new program, effective immediately, in which it will let 24,000 of them who have sponsors enter the United States — and send the rest back to Mexico.
The administration will also use the Trump-era rule known as Title 42, a Covid ban it has been trying to end in court, to send Venezuelans back across the border.
To be admitted under the new program, Venezuelans will have to apply for entry while outside the country and prove they have a U.S.-based sponsor, similar to the program the Biden administration set up for Ukrainians in the spring. The 24,000 accepted will have temporary humanitarian parole and authorization to work in the U.S.
Immigration advocates say the new program will leave the majority of Venezuelans seeking asylum in the U.S. living in dangerous conditions in camps and shelters in northern Mexico. They say it will also greatly expand a Trump-era policy the Biden administration said in court it wanted to end.
Title 42, the public health authority used since the beginning of the Covid pandemic to push migrants back into Mexico without allowing them to claim asylum, will now be expanded to include Venezuelans under a new deal reached between the U.S. and Mexico. The result could mean thousands of Venezuelans living without the ability to work or find housing in dangerous cities like Juarez, Mexico.

Fuentes del Departamento de Seguridad Nacional (DHS) anunciaron la expansión del ya existente programa de Estatus de Protección Temporal (TPS, por sus siglas en inglés) a los venezolanos que hayan residido en el país de manera ininterrumpida desde antes del 31 de julio de 2023.
Los venezolanos podrán disfrutar del TPS por un periodo de 18 meses.
El DHS justificó esta medida, que podría beneficiar a 472.000 personas, “por las condiciones extraordinarias y temporales en Venezuela que impiden que las personas regresen de manera segura”.
Anteriormente, el programa solo beneficiaba a los venezolanos que hubieran llegado al país antes de marzo de 2021, y que suman unas 242.700 personas.
El anuncio llega después de que los alcaldes de varias ciudades estadounidenses que se han visto desbordadas con el aumento de la llegada de migrantes le pidieran al presidente de EE.UU., Joe Biden, que les facilite a los recién llegados el acceso a permisos de trabajo para así descongestionar los servicios sociales que les dan ayuda.
En los últimos años la administración Biden ha usado el TPS a “una escala sin precedentes”, informó la cadena estadounidense CBS News, expandiéndolo para cobijar a migrantes de países como Afganistán, Camerún, Etiopía, Haití, Myanmar, Sudán y Ucrania.
Además, renovó los programas ya establecidos para ciudadanos de El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua y Nepal.
