Cambodia to start Covid-19 booster shot campaign in October

Bangkok Desk, Sep 12 (EFE).- Cambodia, where over 60% of the population has been fully vaccinated, will start offering a third coronavirus vaccine shot to citizens starting in October, the government said Sunday.

Prime minister Hun Sen announced the initiative during a two-day visit by China’s foreign minister Wang Yi to inaugurate a Chinese-funded soccer stadium.

Hun Sen thanked the Asian giant for the millions of the Covid-19 vaccine shots it donated to Cambodia to combat the pandemic.

China, as well as the United Nations international aid initiative COVAX, which supplies donated vaccines to developing countries, has provided the mass majority of the doses administered in the Southeast Asian nation, which has one of the highest vaccination rates in the region.

Yi announced China would send three million vaccine shots and $270 million in financial aid to Cambodia during an early joint press conference with his Cambodian opposite number, Prak Sokhonn.

Since the onset of the pandemic, Cambodia, which has a population of around 16 million people, has registered 99,000 coronavirus infections and 2,028 related deaths.EFE
