Several children killed in school shooting in Russia

(Update 2: updates death toll, adds details on shooter)

Moscow, May 11 (EFE).- Nine people, including eight children, were killed in a shooting at a school in the Russian city of Kazan on Tuesday, officials said.

The attack, which was carried out by a former student at the school, injured 32 people, including 18 children who were hospitalized. Six of them are in critical condition, according to the Tatarstan health ministry.

The perpetrator, who has been named as Ilnaz Galiayev, 19, surrendered to police without resistance.

He acted “alone”, the Tatarstan presidency spokesperson Lila Galímova said, denying Russian media reports of a second suspect.

There were 714 children attending school and about 70 employees, including 52 teachers, when the shooting occurred.

Images posted on social media show pupils fleeing the school. Most of the students were evacuated to a neighboring kindergarten.

Ending the slaughter after eight minutes, Galiayev walked out of the school with his arms raised to surrender to police in Kazan, capital of Russia’s Muslim-majority republic of Tatarstan.

“We lost seven children: four boys and three girls. We also lost a teacher and a worker,” said Tatarstan President Rustam Minninkhanov, who declared Wednesday a day of mourning for the victims.

“Today a great tragedy has occurred for our republic and our country,” he told the Rossiya-24 television channel.
