Ukraine humanitarian corridors shut Wednesday over Russian attacks

Kyiv, Apr 13 (EFE).- Ukrainian authorities said they would not be able to open humanitarian corridors in the country for the evacuation of civilians and the supply of basic products Wednesday due to blockades and ceasefire violations by Russian troops.

Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk said that these corridors, which began to function unevenly a few days after the Russian invasion began, “cannot be opened today.”

She said on her Telegram channel that in the Zaporizhia region “the (Russian) occupants have blocked the evacuation buses and in the Lugansk region they are violating the ceasefire.”

Zaporizhia is the usual destination for refugees leaving the besieged and nearly destroyed port city of Mariupol, under Russian siege since almost the beginning of the invasion on Feb. 24.

Lugansk, a pro-Russian region with a self-proclaimed independent republic recognized by Moscow, is currently one of the main targets of Russian forces.

“Occupiers not only ignore the norms of international humanitarian law, but also cannot adequately control their population on the ground,” the deputy prime minister added.

“All this creates such a level of danger on the routes that today we are forced to refrain from opening humanitarian corridors. But we will work to reopen humanitarian corridors as soon as possible,” she said. EFE
