Trump seeks ‘special master’ to oversee Mar-a-Lago documents

Miami, Aug 22 (EFE).- Former US president Donald Trump asked a Florida court on Monday to stop the review of documents that the FBI removed from his Mar-a-Lago home and demanded the appointment of a “special master” to oversee the handling of the materials taken.

In announcing the filing, Trump on Monday described the search carried out by FBI agents at his home in Palm Beach, Florida, as an “unnecessary, unwarranted and unAmerican Break-In.”

He also claimed that “ALL” the documents that he took from the White House to his residence had been previously declassified.

The unsealed search warrant showed that the FBI removed classified material from Trump’s residence. He is now being investigated for crimes including violation of the Espionage Act, destruction or concealment of documents to obstruct a government investigation, and the unlawful removal of government documents from the White House.

Trump complained that the agents “demanded that the security cameras be turned off, a request we rightfully denied,” and that they prevented his lawyers from observing what was being taken.

The Republican claimed that the FBI took documents protected by the attorney-client and executive privilege, as well as passports and also opened his safe.

He also demanded that the Department of Justice “immediately STOP the review of documents illegally seized from my home” and that a “SPECIAL MASTER” — a third-party attorney — oversee the handling of the seized material, as well as the return of his property.

Meanwhile, the federal judge deciding whether to disclose the reasons why the FBI searched Mar-a-Lago reiterated Monday that he has an interest in publishing them but has not yet decided to do so.

Judge Bruce Reinhart said that he would decide Thursday whether to unseal the redacted version of the affidavit. EFE
