World No.1 Barty knocked out of Olympics in shock round-1 loss

Tokyo, Jul 25 (EFE).- Australia’s world No. 1 Ashleigh Barty was knocked out of the Tokyo 2020 women’s tennis on Sunday in a shock opening-round loss to Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo.

The Spaniard, ranked No. 48 in the world, dominated Barty 4-6, 3-6 in 94 minutes at Ariake Park in the Japanese capital.

The 25-year-old 2021 Wimbledon winner and two-time Grand Slam champion accumulated 55 unforced errors, compared to 24-year-old Sorribes’ 13.

It was their first meeting and each players’ debut at an Olympic Games.

With the main rival of world No. 2 Naomi Osaka eliminated, the Japanese tennis star cruised through to the second round with a victory over China’s Zheng Saisai 6-1, 6-4 in just over an hour and a half. EFE
