Djokovic’s bid for Golden Slam ended by Zverev

Tokyo, Jul 30 (EFE).- Novak Djokovic’s quest for a coveted Golden Slam was nixed by Alexander Zverev, who staged a comeback in the men’s singles semi-final at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics to end it 1-6, 6-3, 6-1.

The Serbian world number one still has a chance of Olympic gold in the mixed doubles.

Djokovic was on course for the Golden Slam, having already bagged the Australian Open, Roland Garros and Wimbledon and with the US Open at Flushing Meadows still up for grabs after the Olympics, but he will now set his sights on the Grand Slam and fight for men’s singles bronze in Tokyo.

The Serbian dominated the first set but Zverev turned the match on its head in the second, managing to break Dkojovic’s serve on two occasions to force 6-3.

The semi-final came to a close two hours and three minutes after it began with the German blasting through the final set 6-1.

Zverev will face Karen Khachanov in the final after the Russian beat Spain’s Pablo Carreño earlier on Friday.

The Spaniard is the only obstacle between Djokovic and the bronze medal, which would be his second after Beijing 2008.EFE
