Animals cool off with ice lollies as heatwave grips Spain

Madrid, Aug 13 (EFE).- Animals at Valencia’s Bioparc on Friday ate frozen fruits and vegetables to cool off from the extreme heat as an intense heatwave grips Spain.

The heatwave hit Spain on Wednesday and is expected to last until Monday, with temperatures reaching up to 46C (114.8F) in the southern region of Andalusia and over 40C in the capital Madrid.

The national weather agency Aemet has warned temperatures are 5 to 10 degrees above normal for this time of year.

Domestic temperature records could be broken over the weekend, the agency added.

Swathes of the country are on alert for dangerous temperatures, with red warnings issued to parts of Andalusia, Extremadura and Catalonia.

Experts at the World Meteorological Organization warned Friday that even though high temperatures in August in Spain are normal, this year’s summer season is particularly intense.

Spain is also on maximum alert for wildfires, which have ravaged other parts of the Mediterranean including Italy, Greece, Algeria and Turkey. EFE
