Madrid’s Landscape of Light, Retiro park granted Unesco World Heritage status

Beijing, Jul 25 (EFE).- The Landscape of Light in Madrid, which includes the vast Retiro park and the Paseo del Prado boulevard in the capital city of Spain, was inscribed as a Unesco World Heritage site Sunday.

The 44th session of the Unesco World Heritage Committee in Fuzhou, China, decided to grant world heritage status to the Spanish application, making it the southern European country’s 49th entry to the world-wide list of recognized outstanding sites.

The blend of urban, artistic and natural space in Madrid was recognized for its universal and exceptional value, as the Spanish delegation showed gratitude for the support and promised to protect the site’s integrity.

On July 21, the Maritime Mercantile City of Liverpool, including six areas in the historic centre and docklands of the English city, was stripped of its Unesco World Heritage status over failure by local authorities to protect its integrity.

Infrastructure development in the area, including plans for the new Everton FC stadium, had resulted in “serious deterioration” of the site, they said. EFE
