At least 20 dead in Egypt garment factory fire

Cairo, Mar 11 (efe-epa).- At least 20 people have died after fire engulfed a textile factory north of the Egyptian capital Cairo on Thursday, authorities said.

Twenty-four others were wounded in the blaze at the four-story building located in the industrial zone of al-Obour in Qaliubia governorate, about 35 kilometers north-east of Cairo, local authorities added in a statement.

Firefighters hurried to the scene and they later managed to contain the fire and prevent it from extending to nearby factories, according to Qaliubia authorities.

So far, no details have been given on the cause of the fire.

In 2016, a fire broke out in an old hotel in the Islamic Cairo neighborhood and left three dead and almost 100 people injured after it spread through nearby shops and buildings.EFE-EPA
