US inaugurates unit of its space forces in South Korea

Seoul, Dec 14 (EFE).- The United States army inaugurated a unit of its space forces Wednesday in South Korea, a step to strengthen its defensive capabilities on the peninsula amid increasingly dangerous weapons developed by Pyongyang and to strengthen its assets throughout Asia Pacific.

The US Space Forces Korea will be headquartered at Osan Air Base in Pyeongtaek, 65 kilometers south of Seoul, where the US Seventh Air Force is based.

The inauguration of the unit in Osan was attended by the commander of the US Forces in Korea Paul LaCamera, the vice commander of the combined forces South Korea-US Ahn Byung-seok and Anthony Mastalir, commander of the newly launched US Space Forces in Asia Pacific on which the new unit will depend.

Thanks to the new unit, the alliance formed by Seoul and Washington “will have greater capacity to execute in multiple fields within the Korean theater of operations,” LaCamera said during the opening ceremony.

“With China as a growing threat, the Indo-Pacific command’s area of responsibility is our top priority and the activation of this command underscores our continued commitment to a free Indo-Pacific,” Mastalir said.

The new body, one of the few Space Forces units that the Pentagon has decided to establish outside US territory, aims to detect and track projectiles launched from North Korea or other regions through assets in outer space, such as satellites.

Satellites are already used to analyze and locate Pyongyang launches, but experts believe the establishment of this unit would improve the interoperability of the different bodies and the efficiency of tracking and obtaining detailed information from them over time. shells. EFE
