Kenyan revelers resort to ‘Party on wheels’ to avoid overcrowded nightclubs

Nairobi, Jun 28 (EFE).- In order to avoid normally overcrowded nightclubs during the ever-present Covid-19 pandemic, Kenyan partygoers have resorted to a matatu, or minibus, converted into a luxurious mobile club dubbed “Party on wheels.”

“There’s not a lot of people inside here, so it’s more safe,” said one of the promoters, stressing the difficulty of maintaining social distance and complying with Covid-19 safety measures in normal nightclubs.

The mobile club was developed by a group of artists and event organizers with the aim of offering an alternative to people who want to avoid conventional clubs — which are often overcrowded — over fears of contracting Covid-19.

“We are having fun while moving,” said one of the organizers. “There’s drinks there, a DJ, your friends… It’s amazing. An amazing experience.”

The interior of the minibus has the look and atmosphere of a nightclub and is fitted with a DJ deck, bar, dance floor, lounge sofas, neon and disco lights, screen monitors, a sound system, and a washroom.

Kenya is known to have public service vehicles, especially minibuses known as matatus, decorated with graffiti and lively interior designs to catch the eye of potential customers.

“In Kenya we are so proud of our matatu culture,” they added, after showing off their new wheeled contribution to the streets of Nairobi.
