Amy Schumer gears up to co-host the Oscars
Los Angeles, Mar 22 (EFE).- Amy Schumer, the first-ever female comedian to sell out a show at Madison Square Garden in New York, is gearing up to co-present this year’s Oscar ceremony as the annual ceremony brings back the role of host for the first time in three years.
”I’m pretty scared,” Schumer, known for her irreverent and natural comedy, told Efe in an interview.
Schumer will join Regina Hall and Wanda Sykes on stage at the Academy Awards ceremony.
Last year’s gala, defanged by the pandemic, garnered just 10 million live viewers, its lowest on record and a decrease by 60% compared to the previous year.
Conscious of the declining audience, the Academy Awards this year recruited three female talents to preside over the gala and appears more determined than ever to put on a successful show.
“I just think that women are being empowered more and more to direct or to create shows when for so long they weren’t, I think that’s really exciting, the more stories the better,” Schumer said.
Only three women have hosted the Oscars in the last 20 years — Whoopi Goldberg, Ellen DeGeneres and Anne Hathaway, who co-hosted with James Franco.
The trio of female hosts hope to correct this imbalance.
Schumer belongs to a generation of female comedic talent alongside the likes of Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Amy Poehler and Rebel Wilson, all of whom tackle sexual taboos, feminism, racism and motherhood.
“This will be my first time going on the road since I had a baby,” Schumer added. “It’s a lot but my family is so supportive.”
Turning to current events, Schumer has requested that Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who before he took politics by storm was himself a comic actor, address the Oscars ceremony.
The final decision, however, depends on the producers of the award ceremony. EFE
