Trevor Noah signs off from The Daily Show after 7 years

Washington, Dec 8 (EFE).- Comedian Trevor Noah farewelled “The Daily Show” on Thursday after seven years at the helm of the popular late-night satirical news program.

“I’m grateful to you, every single one of you,” Noah told his audience in his final sign-off 10 weeks after his shock announcement that he would be leaving.

“I remember when we started the show, we couldn’t get enough people to fill an audience.”

The South African, who wants to do more stand-up work, has achieved huge popularity in the US market since he took the reins of the show in 2015, after Jon Stewart left.

“I found myself thinking throughout the time of everything we’ve gone through. The Trump presidency, the pandemic, just the journey, more pandemic and I realize that after the seven years, my time is up,” Noah said.

The comedian also had a message for his critics, saying “even the people who hate-watched, we still got the ratings, thank you,” and dedicated a “special shout-out” to the Black women who have shaped his life: his mother, his grandmother and his aunts.

“Do yourself a favor,” Noah told viewers. “If you truly want to know what to do or how to do it, or maybe the best way or the most equitable way, talk to Black women. They’re a lot of the reason why I’m here. So I’m grateful to them and I’m grateful to you. This has been an honor, thank you.”

“The Daily Show” has yet to announce Noah’s official permanent replacement, but several household names will take his place on an interim basis in the meantime.

Comedy Central has indicated that Al Franken, Chelsea Handler, D.L. Hughley, Leslie Jones, John Leguizamo, Hasan Minhaj, Kal Penn, Sarah Silverman, Wanda Sykes and Marlon Wayans will rotate as presenters starting on Jan. 17.

Next year Noah will return to the stage with his Off The Record tour that will take him to 28 American cities, starting with Atlanta, Georgia, on Jan. 20. EFE
