Israeli military kill Palestinian in West Bank clashes

Jerusalem, Apr 30 (EFE).- A Palestinian was shot dead in overnight clashes with the Israeli army in the occupied West Bank, hours after a security guard was killed at a Jewish settlement in the same territory.

The deceased, identified as Yayhia Ali Odwan, 27, died of gunshot wounds to the heart “after the Israeli occupation forces stormed” the West Bank’s Azun town, the state-run Wafa news agency reported.

The Israeli troops “carried out anti-terrorist activities” in the village last night, an Israeli military spokesman told Efe.

During the operation, “several suspects threw Molotov cocktails at the soldiers, endangering their safety,” to which they “responded by firing live ammunition,” according to the source.

The incident came hours after a shooting attack that killed a security guard in the Ariel Jewish settlement last night, prompting Israeli security forces to launch an extensive search and capture operation.

The Ariel attack was claimed by the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, a Palestinian militia associated with the ruling Fatah party.

In a video message, the armed group assumed responsibility for the “heroic operation”, which came as “a response to the Israeli aggression in Jerusalem”, according to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz.

Since late March, the region has experienced an escalation of tension as a result of four attacks on Israeli territory that claimed 14 lives.

These attacks were followed by arrest operations, armed clashes and incidents with Israeli forces in the West Bank that have caused around 30 Palestinian deaths. EFE
