Police attack home of Haiti’s prime minister

Port-au-Prince, Jan 26 (EFE).- Haitian police angry about what they perceive to the government’s indifference to the deaths this month of 10 of their comrades mounted a violent protest Thursday at the private residence of Prime Minister Ariel Henry.

The attack came as Henry was en route back to Haiti from Argentina, where he attended the summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States.

Media outlets reported damage to the premier’s home in Port-au-Prince’s Delmas 60 district and to vehicles parked out front.

After the disturbance at the residence, the cops went to the airport with the aim of preventing Henry’s plane from landing. They blocked the runway with barricades and piles of burning tires, forcing a suspension of takeoffs and landings.

Gunfire was heard throughout the capital on Thursday following news that seven police had been killed in Savien, north of the capital.

The latest killings brought to 10 the number of police slain in the last two weeks.

A number of schools in Port-au-Prince sent students home and many residents remained indoors.

Last year, 55 police officers were killed amid a spike in murders, rapes, robberies and kidnappings blamed on Haiti’s well-armed gangs.

Henry, an unelected prime minister, has led the Haitian government since shortly after the July 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moise. EFE mm/dr
