Democrat running for Florida governor chooses Hispanic as running mate

Miami, USA, Aug 26 (EFE).- Democratic candidate for governor of Florida, Charlie Crist, has elected a Hispanic woman, Karla Hernandez-Mats, as his running mate for the November elections, after winning in the primaries of his party earlier this week.

Crist, according to local media, will officially announce Saturday Hernandez-Mats, president of the Miami-Dade County Teachers’ Union, as his choice for lieutenant governor in his attempt to defeat the current Florida governor, Republican Ron DeSantis.

Hernandez-Mats served as a teacher at a school in the city of Hialeah, near Miami, for a decade and was awarded “Teacher of the Year” before being elected president of the county’s teachers’ union.

Hernandez-Mats has been very critical of DeSantis’ anti-Covid-19 policies and government measures under him, even saying that the state was more interested in censoring what teachers can teach and ban books, rather than ban assault weapons.

The election of the president of the United Teachers of Dade as a running mate of the veteran Democratic politician was celebrated by the Florida Education Association, which underlined the Hernandez-Mats’ concern for children, families and the community.

Crist, 66, has earlier served as Florida governor from 2007 to 2011. EFE
