Third clash in 5 days between police and protesters in Thailand

Bangkok, Aug 11 (EFE).- Thai police on Wednesday shot rubber bullets and tear gas at anti-government protesters calling for the resignation of prime minister Prayut Chan-Ocha amid mounting public discontent over the government handling of the pandemic.

A dozen protesters have been arrested after some of them had thrown firecrackers at the police and the explosion of a police vehicle’s tank with no casualties reported, the Bangkok Post newspaper said.

The rally came after Tuesday’s violent clashes that led to the arrest of 48 protesters and the confiscation of 122 motorcycles.

On Saturday, the police employed riot gear to disperse some 1,000 protesters who took to the streets amid a series of demonstrations that have taken place over the past few weeks.

The flare-up coincided with the first anniversary – on Tuesday – of a rally that saw a student read a 10-point manifesto calling for reforming the monarchy and breaking a sacred taboo in Thai society.

Thailand on Wednesday reported 21,038 coronavirus cases and 207 deaths over the past 24, which bring the total to 816,989 and 6,795 respectively.

The surge in cases has prompted the government to impose restrictions in Bangkok and 28 other provinces, including a night curfew, limiting gatherings to five people and the closure of restaurants and malls among others. EFE
