Rescuers search for 42 missing in Indonesia landslide that killed 10

Jakarta, Mar 7 (EFE).- Rescue teams on Tuesday were looking for 42 people who went missing after a landslide caused by heavy rainfall struck the small, remote Indonesian island of Serasan resulting in at least 10 deaths, emergency services said.

Eight people have been rescued in the last few hours, bringing down the number of missing from 50 to 42, the National Agency for Disaster Countermeasure (BNPB) said in a statement.

Four of the rescued are seriously injured and four are in critical condition.

A total of 1,216 people have been evacuated from the affected areas, while rescue efforts are hampered by bad weather after almost a week of uninterrupted rain and logistical problems on this island, located in the Riau archipelago.

Photos released by the BNPB show fallen trees and torn off roofs at the site of the landslide.

Indonesia is prone to floods and landslides during the rainy season, which is at its peak between December and February. EFE
