EU approves training mission, €500 million military aid for Ukraine

Luxembourg, Oct 17 (EFE).- The European Union gave the greenlight on Monday to a military training mission of Ukrainian forces and an additional 500 million euros ($487 million) in military aid to support Kyiv.

“Today we step up our support to Ukraine to defend itself from Russia’s illegal aggression. The EU Military Assistance Mission will train the Ukrainian Armed Forces so they can continue their courageous fight,” the EU’s top diplomat Josep Borrell said in a statement.

“EUMAM is (…) clear proof that the EU will stand by Ukraine for as long as is needed,” he added.

EU foreign ministers approved the measures during a European Council meeting in Luxembourg on Monday.

“The aim of the mission is to contribute to enhancing the military capability of Ukraine’s Armed Forces to effectively conduct military operations, in order to allow Ukraine to defend its territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders, effectively exercise its sovereignty and protect civilians,” the Council said in a statement.

It added that the mission would initially last for two years and provide Ukrainian troops with “individual, collective and specialized” training.

The sixth tranche of military aid worth 500 million euros brings the total of EU contributions for Ukraine to 3.1 billion.

The assistance will consist of 490 million euros for military equipment and €10 million to cover equipment and supplies, “such as personal protective equipment, first aid kits, and fuel,” the Council said.

“Russia’s latest indiscriminate attacks on Ukrainian civilians and civilian infrastructure are another proof of Russia’s complete disrespect for human rights and international law,” Borrell said.

“The EU will continue supporting Ukraine as long as it takes and as long as is needed,” he added. EFE
