Tokyo Olympics committee says all venues will be available in 2021

Madrid Desk, Jul 17 (efe-epa).- The organizing committee for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games said facilities already lined up for the international sporting event such as the Athletes Village and media centers will be available next year.

Tokyo 2020 executive director Toshiro Muto made the announcement during the 136th International Olympic Committee session, held via video conference

The installations had been destined to be repurposed by 2021, with the Athlete’s Village set to be turned into residential apartments.

Muto added that the committee would need to coordinate with the companies contracted to take over the accommodation and the service providers due to work for the event.

The Tokyo Olympic Games had been scheduled to take place this summer, but were postponed until next year due to the coronavirus pandemic following an agreement between organizers and the IOC in March.

The change in schedule is set to interrupt other dates on the sporting calendar and so far only 43 percent of athletes have confirmed their participation at the Olympics.

Muto said the committee would from September draw up a large scale plan on how to enforce the appropriate hygiene protocols at the Games.

The organizing committee confirmed that tickets already sold for the event would remain valid for 2021, but that refunds would be possible from the fall.

Yoshiro Mori, the president of the organizing committee, reiterated the “simplified” nature of the Games next year.

“They will be different to any other,” he added.
