China accuses US of launching disinformation campaign

Shanghai, China, May 25 (EFE).- China accused the United States of launching a “disinformation operation” Thursday in response to allegations that an organization sponsored by Beijing led an espionage and hacking campaign against the Americans.

“This is patchwork news, seriously lacking in evidence and extremely unprofessional. (…) Obviously, this is a collective disinformation operation by the United States,” said Mao Ning, a Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman, at a press conference.

The US National Security Agency and technology company Microsoft said Wednesday that the “Volt Typhoon” organization was responsible for an alleged cyber attack campaign that could “interrupt communication” between the US and Asia in the future.

Mao accused the intelligence network known as “Five Eyes” comprising the US, Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and New Zealand, of having “published news with false information” along with the agency, calling it “ironic.”

The spokeswoman again said the US launched cyberattacks against a polytechnic university and demanded that Washington “explain” that alleged raid “instead of spreading fake news to divert attention.”

According to Microsoft, the reported cyberattacks affected the communications, manufacturing, public services, transportation, construction, maritime, government, information technology and education sectors.

The agency’s Cybersecurity Director Rob Joyce said a Chinese-sponsored agent outside the US used network-embedded tools to evade American defenses and leave no trace.

The hackers, active since mid-2021, allegedly directed their attacks at organizations in Guam, a US island in the Pacific home to a major naval and air base, as well as other parts of the country. EFE
