Thailand mulls increasing measures to curb worst Covid-19 wave

Bangkok, Jul 8 (EFE).- Thailand’s health authorities said Thursday they had proposed increasing government measures to combat the strong Covid-19 wave the country is suffering, the worst since the beginning of the pandemic.

Among the proposals is the restriction of movement in areas deemed high risk, including Bangkok, as well as the closure of non-essential establishments for at least 14 days, Kiattiphum Wongrajit, the health ministry’s permanent secretary, told media.

Prime Minister Gen. Prayut Chan-ocha’s cabinet will meet Friday to study the measures.

The current orders, which include the closure of bars and restaurants and the obligation to wear a mask at all times, among other measures, have not managed to reduce the number of new daily cases.

Thailand, which is experiencing its worst wave of infections during the entire pandemic, registered 7,058 new infected and 75 Covid-19 deaths Thursday, the highest number of fatalities due to the virus.

Since January 2020, when it was the first country in the world to detect a case of Covid-19 outside of China, the country has detected a total of 308,230 infections, including 2,462 deaths. EFE
