Guterres calls for an end to ‘unwinnable’ war in Ukraine
New York, Mar 22 (EFE).- Russia will not win the war in Ukraine and negotiating an end to the conflict is “inevitable,” United Nations secretary-general António Guterres said Tuesday.
“This war is unwinnable,” Guterres told reporters at a press conference in New York.
“Sooner or later, it will have to move from the battlefield to the peace table. This is inevitable,” he warned Russia.
Nearly a month after Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Guterres said that there was “enough on the table” for an immediate ceasefire and talks on how to stop the slaughter in Ukrainian cities.
“The only question is: How many more lives must be lost?
“How many more bombs must fall? How many more Mariupols must be destroyed? How many more Ukrainians and Russians will be killed before everyone realizes that this war has no winners – only losers?” Guterres said.
The UN chief denounced the “appalling human suffering and destruction in cities, towns and villages” like Mariupol.
The strategic port city, located on the Sea of Azov, has been under Russian siege for weeks and has become a symbol of the human suffering caused by the war.
Russian bombings have targeted civilian buildings including hospitals, schools and maternity wards.
“It is time to end this absurd war,” Guterres said. EFE
