Mayer makes history with Super G title defense

Beijing, Feb 8 (EFE) – Austria’s Matthias Mayer made history on Tuesday by defending his Super G Olympic title and becoming only the second man in the history of the sport to win gold at three different Games, emulating Norway’s Kjetil Andre Aamodt.

Mayer, 31, who was Olympic downhill champion in Sochi’14 (Russia) and who won bronze in that discipline in Monday’s event, became the third man in the history of alpine skiing to win three golds in three different Games, matching Aamodt – the most successful winter Olympian – who won in the super G events in Albertville ’92 (France), Salt Lake City 2002 (USA, where he also won the combined event) and Turin ’06 (Italy); and Italian Deborah Compagoni, who the super in Albertville and who in Nagano ’98 (Japan) defended the giant title she had won four years earlier in Lillehammer (Norway).

Mayer’s aggressive approach delivered crucial milliseconds in the lower part of the course of the imposing and technical Yanqing track, which he covered in one minute, 19 seconds and 94 hundredths, four less than the American Ryan Cochran-Siegle, who won a surprising silver.

Norway’s Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, the current World Cup leader who had finished fifth in the downhill on Monday, was 42 hundredths of a second behind and captured bronze, the first Olympic medal of his career. EFE
