Ai Weiwei: Cubans deserve a better life
Porto, Portugal, Jul 22 (EFE).- Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei said he hoped to see progressive change in Cuba following recent demonstrations.
The world-renowned creator and activist made the remarks to Efe as he presented his new exhibition Intertwine in Porto, Portugal, a country he now calls home.
“Hopefully, it will develop into a good, more democratic progress,” he said of the recent and rare anti-government protests in Havana and other Cuban cities.
“I think Cuba’s people deserve a better life and a better government.”
The dissident has previously described any “relevant” art as political, and his new show
at the Serralves museum is no exception as it explores the risks and impact of man-made climate change, particularly on the Brazilian Atlantic Forest.
One of the most impressive of the many works on display is a 32-meter tall recreation of a Pequi tree, which is native to Brazil and is at risk of extinction.
The artist said he believed some people are still in the dark about the threat of climate change and foresaw more natural disasters in the future, with floods, drought and hunger becoming more common.
The interior exhibition will run until 5 February 2022 while the exterior installations will remain in place until 9 July 2022. EFE
