Spain backs Ukraine integrity, condemns Belarus using migration as weapon

Sigtuna, Sweden, Dec 2 (EFE).- Spain fully supports restoring the territorial integrity of Ukraine and condemns the use of migration as a weapon by Belarus, Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares told the 28th Ministerial Council of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe on Thursday.

Spain “supports Latvia, Lithuania and Poland against the use of migrants by Belarus to destabilise their borders,” Albares told ministers at the meeting in Sigtuna, a town near Stockholm.

According to the foreign minister, the OCSE is being marred by conflicts from “the Baltics to the Caucasus” and the Covid-19 pandemic had slowed efforts to implement goals agreed in the 1975 Helsinki Accords and later signed in Vienna.

Albares also said the OSCE must continue its efforts to end conflicts between Armenia and Azerbaijan in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region and in Georgia, where Russian forces hold parts of the country.

The OCSE must revitalize its tools for preventing conflict in addition to its efforts in conflict resolution, Albares urged.

In his brief remarks he also mentioned climate change and gender equality as two important issues the 57-member international body must deal with. EFE
