Japan’s Sony looks to capitalize on metaverse revolution

Tokyo, May 18 (EFE).- Japanese multinational Sony group said on Wednesday that it planned to play a leading role in the metaverse and artificial intelligence spheres as part of its growth strategy.

“Sony intends to leverage the unique strengths provided by its diverse businesses and expertise in game technology, which will form the basis of entertainment experiences going forward,” the company said in a statement.

Through its partnership with Manchester City FC, Sony hopes to create “new entertainment experiences” in live sporting events, and is looking to capitalize on growth opportunities in the music industry with live virtual performances by Sony Music artists.

“The metaverse is at the same time a social space and live network space where games, music, movies and anime intersect,” Sony’s chief executive, Kenichiro Yoshida, said at a strategy briefing on Wednesday.

In the artificial intelligence sphere, the company said it was supporting the “evolution of the entertainment space” in areas such as virtual production, sports and virtual reality to get closer to both creators and users.

The technology company expects its video games business to grow with its PlayStation 5 console, which it said it expected to sell 18 million units by the end of 2022. EFE
