Death toll climbs to 10 day after rocket hits house in Kabul

Kabul, Aug 30 (EFE).- The number of people killed by a rocket exploding against a house in Kabul rose to 10 on Monday, a day after the incident, while at least five people were injured, according to sources from the area.

“We now know that 10 residents were killed and five more injured in the rocket attack from yesterday. Most of the killed and injured victims are children,” said Hazrat Shah, a local community leader from the Khawaja Bughra area, where the incident took place.

“The family had some guests in their house when the rocket hit it,” Shah told EFE.

Meanwhile Taliban spokesperson Bilal Karimi put the death toll at 7, but said that they were still investigating the incident.

A number of Taliban sources consulted by EFE confirmed that the incident was caused by the impact of one of the rockets that were fired towards the airport on Sunday, ruling out any link with the United States drone strike against a vehicle allegedly carrying suicide bomber.s

Both these explosions on Sunday took place near the Kabul airport, at a time of heightened tensions after the US government warned of “credible threats” of more attacks against the airport – where US soldiers are stationed – after a suicide bombing outside the premises killed 170 people on Thursday.

The US Central Command had said on Sunday that a drone had struck a vehicle in which alleged members of the IS were moving towards the airport.

On Monday several more rockets were fired towards the Kabul airport and hours later the Afghan offshoot of the IS claimed responsibility for the attacks.

The rockets were fired from the back of a vehicle and mainly fell in vacant areas or were intercepted by the anti-missile system installed at the airport, with no casualties reported, multiple Taliban sources told EFE. EFE
