Uruguay’s strength in agriculture, tech on display at Expo 2020 Dubai

Dubai, Oct 5 (EFE).- Uruguay comes to Expo 2020 Dubai, the first world exposition to be held in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia region, with “much to offer” in addition to its well-known agricultural prowess, the Uruguayan minister of Industry, Energy and Mining told Efe.

“Uruguay produces enough food for 30 million or more people and we are 3 million, so we are a net exporter country, with efficient, competitive agribusiness, which has levels of quality recognized worldwide,” Omar Paganini said during his visit to the Uruguayan pavilion at Expo 2020, inaugurated last Friday.

From Uruguay’s perspective, he said, the holding of Expo 2020 in the United Arab Emirates is “ideal,” as Dubai and the other six members of the federation get most of their food from abroad.

But agriculture is not the only segment of the Uruguayan economy that stands to benefit “from better exchanges,” the minister said.

“The information technology services sector, in which Uruguay is very prominent … can diversify since it is very much oriented to the United States” at present.

Logistics is another interesting sector, Paganini said, pointing out that “the powerful logistics of the (Persian) Gulf can be complemented with distribution in South America.”

“Our mechanisms of free zones and free ports, our special tax and financial management and investment regimes make us attractive for integrating not only Uruguay, but also that area of the world with this area,” he said.

“Uruguay is in a good moment to open up to the world and expand internationally, after handling the pandemic without a lockdown and with a very high vaccination rate,” the minister said at Expo 2020, which had to be postponed until this year because of Covid-19.

“The world is in a reset and there are opportunities that appear every day, we want to take advantage of them, we want to be known,” Paganini said. “We are a country that is far from the main centers of the world, we are a country of few inhabitants, but we have a lot to offer.” EFE iam-fc/vh/lap/dr
