2018 Hispanic Film Festival in Memphis

Como parte de las celebraciones del Mes de la Herencia Hispana, el Departamento de Idiomas y Literaturas del Mundo y el Club de Español, de la Universidad de Memphis, presentan el Festival de Cine Hispano 2018. Este año, el ciclo contempla la exhibición de cinco largometrajes latinoamericanos, de reciente producción, realizados en México, Venezuela, Guatemala, Chile y Uruguay.

Las películas –en español con subtítulos en inglés– se proyectarán una vez por semana, de manera gratuita, entre septiembre y octubre, en el teatro University Center Theater (499 University), a las 6 p.m. El festival comienza con la delicada comedia mexicana Paraíso (2013), de la directora Mariana Chenillo, el 12 de septiembre. A continuación, el ciclo continúa con el emotivo drama infantil Pelo malo (2013) –largometraje ya reseñado en esta columna– de la directora venezolana Mariana Rondón, el 25 de septiembre.

En octubre, se presentará el interesante drama guatemalteco Ixcanul (2015), de Jayro Bustamante, y el notable thriller dramático, El club (2015), del chileno Pablo Larraín. El festival se cerrará con la comedia uruguaya Mr. Kaplan (2014), del director Álvaro Brechner.

El Festival de Cine Hispano, orientado a un público con criterio formado, ha sido posible, por segundo año consecutivo, gracias al patrocinio del fondo Student Events Allocation Funds, la distribuidora Pragda, Spain Arts & Culture y la Secretaría de Estado de Cultura de España. Una opción de estacionamiento conveniente se encuentra en el garaje Zach Curlin Parking, conectado directamente con el University Center. As part of the Hispanic Heritage Month celebration, the Department of World Languages ​​and Literatures and the Spanish Club at the University of Memphis present the 2018 Hispanic Film Festival. This year, the film series will feature five Latin American movies coming from México, Venezuela, Guatemala, Chile, and Uruguay.

The films – in Spanish with English subtitles –will be screened once per week in September and October, at the University Center Theater (499 University), at 6 p.m. Admission to the festival is free. The first film, Paradise (2013), a low-key comedy by Mariana Chenillo, will be shown on September 12th. Next, the film series will screen Bad Hair (2013), a moving drama, already reviewed in this column, directed by the Venezuelan filmmaker Mariana Rondón, on September 25th.

Then, the festival will show Ixcanul (2015), an interesting drama from Guatemala, by Jayro Bustamante, followed by The Club (2015), an intriguing thriller by Chilean director Pablo Larraín. The festival will end with the Uruguayan comedy Mr. Kaplan, by Álvaro Brechner.

The Hispanic Film Festival, intended for mature audiences, was made possible with the support of the Student Events Allocation Funds at The University of Memphis, Pragda Film Distributor, Spain Arts & Culture, and the Secretary of State for Culture of Spain.
