Iran’s Raisi says IAEA must drop probe to revive nuclear deal

Tehran, Aug 29 (EFE).- Iranian president Ebrahim Raisi on Monday said the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) must drop its probe into uranium particles found at three undeclared sites to restore the 2015 nuclear deal.

Without settlement of safeguard issues, speaking of an agreement is meaningless, Raisi said during his first press briefing since taking office over a year ago.

The president added that to salvage the nuclear pact, the IAEA would have to drop its probe and that negotiations on lifting economic sanctions would be necessary.

Raisi stressed that it was Iran’s right to have nuclear energy for peaceful purposes but that Israel was lobbying to block Tehran from enjoying this right.

European Union-mediated talks between Iran and the United States have been ongoing for 16 months to reinstate the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

The deal was penned in 2015 but collapsed three years later when then-US president Donald Trump pulled out of the agreement and slapped stiff sanctions on Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps.

The EU drafted a fresh version of the deal during the last round of negotiations earlier this month and is currently awaiting a response from the United States and Iran.EFE
