1 person killed as torrential rains continue to lash Japan

Tokyo, July 13 (EFE).- Heavy rains have been pounding the Japanese archipelago since the weekend and have now reached the west coast of the country, causing floods, landslides, and claiming one life.

The torrential rainfall initially hit the southwest and central regions of the country, causing severe flooding and landslides that resulted in the deaths of at least seven people, before moving towards the west.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the Ishikawa and Toyama prefectures experienced a record-breaking 200 millimeters of rain within a six-hour period.

On Thursday, authorities recovered the body of Nobuhiko Akaike, a city assembly member who was killed in a landslide incident in Nanto City, Toyama Prefecture.

He had gone missing while visiting the area to urge residents to evacuate due to floodwaters in a nearby river.

In Toyama prefecture, the floods and mudslides also led to the closure of several roads, leaving at least 41 families isolated.

The meteorological department has warned that heavy rainfall will persist on Thursday and Friday in the same regions in western Japan.

The agency has urged residents to remain vigilant against potential flooding and landslides in other areas of western Japan as well. EFE
