US Senate calls for Putin to be investigated for war crimes

Washington, Mar 15 (EFE).- The United States Senate unanimously approved a resolution late Tuesday to request that Russian President Vladimir Putin and his regime be investigated for possible war crimes in Ukraine.

The resolution does not have the same force as a law, although it serves to support the investigations that the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague has initiated at the request of some 40 countries.

The text of the resolution approved by the Senate “strongly condemns the ongoing violence, war crimes, crimes against humanity, and systematic human rights abuses continually being carried out by the Russian Armed Forces and their proxies and President Putin’s military commanders, at the direction of President Vladimir Putin.”

It also expresses the Senate’s support for any investigation into war crimes or crimes against humanity and human rights abuses carried out by Putin, his government and the Russian armed forces.

The resolution was spearheaded by Republican senator Lindsey Graham, who earlier this month said in a television interview that the only way to end the war in Ukraine was for someone in Russia to “take [Putin] out.”

The White House had to respond by saying that killing foreign leaders is not part of US policy. EFE
