Ricciardo storms to shock win at Monza as Verstappen, Hamilton crash out

Sports Desk, Sep 12 (EFE).- Daniel Ricciardo (McLaren) took a stunning win in the Italian Grand Prix at Monza on Sunday as the two championship leaders Max Verstappen (Red Bull) and Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) collided and crashed out of the race on lap 26.

The Australian, who began in second position alongside Verstappen, had a brilliant start to overtake the Red Bull, and managed the race expertly to take his first grand prix victory since 2018.

“It was never a guarantee we’d be able to hold on for the whole race,” Ricciardo said afterwards. “To lead from start to finish, I don’t think any of us expected that. I just knew something on Friday, I knew something was gonna come.”

His teammate, British youngster Lando Norris, produced another stellar performance to continue his fine form this season and complete an astonishing one-two for a resurgent McLaren team.

“To not only win, but get a one-two, it’s insane. For once, I’m lost for words,” Ricciardo said.

Valtteri Bottas took third place on the podium after benefiting from the 5-second penalty handed to Sergio Perez in the other Red Bull.

Spaniard Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) finished in 6th position, while his compatriot Fernando Alonso (Alpine) finished 8th. EFE
