Biden says he will travel to Vietnam ‘shortly’ to boost ties

Washington, Aug 8 (EFE).- United States President Joe Biden announced Tuesday that he would be traveling to Vietnam soon to deepen the bilateral relationship.

“I’m going to be going to Vietnam shortly. Vietnam wants to change our relationship and become a partner,” Biden said at a fundraising event in Albuquerque in New Mexico state on Tuesday evening.

In recent months, Washington has tried to reset ties with several Indo-Pacific countries in an effort to counter China’s influence in the region.

In April, the US and Philippine armies conducted the largest-ever joint military exercises following a deepening of military ties between the two countries.

The US has also sought to boost relations with Japan and South Korea, reaching an agreement with both countries to share radar information in real time intercept missiles in order to increase their defense reaction to potential attacks, especially from North Korea.

In 2022, the White House promoted the creation of the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework, a multilateral initiative that includes the US, Japan, Australia, Brunei, South Korea, India, Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

The project is aimed at reducing economic dependence on China and safeguarding supply chains of strategic importance, such as raw materials and semiconductors, as availability has been affected by the coronavirus impact in China and the Ukraine war. EFE
