Biden: Trump’s Cuba policy not working

Miami, Oct 5 (efe-epa).- Democratic election candidate Joe Biden said Monday in Little Havana in Miami that President Donald Trump’s policy towards Cuba “is not working” and described the deportation of thousands of Cubans to a country under “dictatorship” as “inconceivable.”

“Cuban-Americans are the best ambassadors of freedom,” Biden said at the José Martí gym in Miami, adding that it is the Cubans who have the power to restore democracy to the island.

After attending an event with the Haitian community in Miami, Biden traveled to Little Havana, a neighborhood where a large community of Cuban exiles predominates and which is frequented by President Trump during campaign times.

Biden, who is outvoted within the Cuban-American community in South Florida by Trump, also criticized Russia’s “significant” presence on the Caribbean island.

He stressed that he has a history of supporting democracy and human rights and that he has fought against “dictators of the right and of the left.”

On the other hand, he stressed that it is “inconceivable” that the Trump administration is deporting hundreds of Cubans to a dictatorship. ”

He also assured that there are almost 10,000 Cubans “languishing in camps” along the Mexican border in pursuit of Trump’s “separatist” immigration policy.

On the other hand, Biden pointed out that the “prosperity of Hispanic Americans is indispensable” for the United States.

“We can build a new administration and make all the diversity of our nation more flexible, including Hispanic communities, Hispanic voters, especially in Florida,” he said.

Biden has so far performed well in the polls against Trump in the “Sunshine State,” which is reduced among Hispanics, especially among Cubans, who mostly seek his re-election and applaud his heavy hand against Cuba.

The Democrat leads the Republican by an average of 8.3 points in national opinion polls, according to the specialized portal Real Clear Politics, but in Florida that distance is only 2 points in favor of the former vice president.

After the first debate that both held last Tuesday, Biden has increased his advantage in Florida, from five points in a poll by the New York Times-Siena, and from 20 in Miami-Dade County, the most populous in Florida, in one released today by Bendixen & Amandi International and the Miami Herald newspaper.

Biden made Monday his first visit to Miami, which coincides with the end of the registration period to vote in the Nov. 3 elections.

Until last August, there were 14 million registered voters in Florida, 5.2 million of them Democrats, 5 million Republicans and 3.6 independents, according to the Florida Division of Elections, a state that contributes 29 of the 538 votes of the Electoral College. EFE-EPA
